Archiving the popular music culture of Japan
and linking it to the
future.
JMCA (JAPAN MUSIC CULTURE ACADEMY) was established to keep a record of the trajectory of the rich culture brought forth by Japan’s popular music and organize and preserve a variety of associated materials and data as a source of new creation. In addressing the question of what to collect, save and make publicly available and how to do it, JMCA will cooperate with various institutions and projects both within and outside Japan to constantly examine the ideal shape of archives and update its own while simultaneously linking the memories and experiences of all people involved in music to the future as a form of shared cultural heritage.
What we do
-
Surveys and Research
JMCA will work together with artists, musicians, engineers, members of the music industry, researchers, listeners, and a variety of other stakeholders to survey and research the ideal shape of popular music archives.
-
Collection and Conservation
JMCA will systematically archive a variety of materials and data from the past to the future, covering everything from major to indies labels.
-
Dissemination and Utilization
JMCA will make archives publicly available and utilize them to the extent possible and connect popular music culture in Japan and the rest of the world through exhibition, owned media, educational program, and event planning.
Our Mission
With the view that that music is not just a form of art but also a living, breathing memory device for our society, JMCA aims to create a cultural platform that bridges the past, present, and future. Through the various stories spun forth by music, we will draw up a new map for understanding ourselves, society, and the world at large.
